A moment of joy in interesting times.
The Village is an oasis for me and many others too. Regardless of age, there is joy in making things with other people. I love this project because it’s a record of my beautifully diverse community. It also gives me an opportunity to reach out to people and share some resources with them, have interesting conversations, and make new friends.
Joy, community, and creativity are powerful.
Remembering to bring those things into the world and have faith in people I know (and don’t know!) helps ease my mind.
We need each other. We were born to be in community. We were born to create. For me, a necessity for mental health is being able to share with others and listen to their stories. Our differences are blessings, and I can learn from other people who’ve had life experiences that aren’t the same as mine.
Parts of my family came here to escape persecution. Parts of my family came here to escape starvation. My father’s family came to build wealth, and they did. Some branches of my family who had to stay behind were destroyed because they had no escape. I think a lot of us in the United States can relate to these realities. The past is complicated.
I feel the United States’ status of former colony especially keenly at the moment–millions of people brought to this continent to make a lot of money for a few, displacing the people who already lived here. I grew up in Virginia in the 60’s and 70’s. I remember wondering in 4th grade why the history I was learning in school didn’t include people of color. I was a voracious reader, and knew about the California Missions, and wondered why they told us Jamestown was the first colony. And why didn’t they teach us about slavery. I hope we remember the stories of all our ancestors, their sacrifices, strength, and resiliency.
